CTA Guide: Discover What’s New in Construction Safety
CALGreen Updates & Sustainable Building
Curious about the latest in construction safety and sustainability? Recent updates to CALGreen-the California Green Building Standards Code-are reshaping how projects approach eco-friendly building. Here’s a quick guide to what’s new and how it impacts your next project.
What is CALGreen?
CALGreen is California’s pioneering green building code, setting mandatory standards for planning, design, construction, and operation to reduce the environmental impact of buildings statewide. It covers everything from energy and water efficiency to material conservation and indoor air quality.
What's New in CALGreen?
- Embodied Carbon Reduction:
As of July 1, 2024, CALGreen requires large non-residential buildings and schools to address embodied carbon—the emissions from producing and transporting construction materials. - Projects must choose one of three compliance paths:
- Building Reuse: Reuse at least 45% of an existing structure and enclosure.
- Performance (Life-Cycle Assessment): Demonstrate a 10% reduction in embodied carbon using a whole building life-cycle assessment (WBLCA).
- Prescriptive: Document environmental product declarations (EPDs) for key materials to ensure transparency and lower carbon choices.
- Water and Energy Efficiency:
New requirements for low-flow fixtures, efficient irrigation, and energy monitoring systems help conserve resources and reduce operational costs. - Waste Reduction:
At least 65% of construction and demolition waste must be diverted from landfills, and projects must submit waste management plans. - Indoor Air Quality:
Enhanced ventilation and the use of low-VOC materials are now standard, promoting healthier environments for building occupants. - Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure:
New construction must include EV charging capabilities, supporting California’s clean transportation goals
Why Do These Updates Matter?
- Lower your project’s carbon footprint and operational costs.
- Meet California’s ambitious climate targets.
- Create healthier, more resilient buildings for communities.
Ready to Build Smarter and Greener?
Take the next step toward compliance and sustainability:
- Stay Informed: Keep up with CALGreen updates to ensure your projects meet the latest requirements.
- Assess Your Project: Evaluate which compliance pathway—reuse, performance, or prescriptive—best fits your building.
- Leverage Technology: Use life-cycle assessment tools and BIM integration to streamline compliance and optimize material choices.
- Consult the Experts: Work with sustainability consultants or experienced design teams to navigate CALGreen’s evolving standards.
